The Confederation of African Football CAF has withdrawn the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON finals hosting right from Cameroon. The competition has been billed to start in June 2019.
The executive committee of CAF at a meeting in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, venue of the just concluded Africa Women’s Cup of Nations tournament has been examining reports of its assessment team.
CAF inspectors recently visited Cameroon to assess the state of infrastructure, stadia, accommodation as well as security preparatory to the 2019 AFCON.
Cameroon lasted hosted the tournament in 1972.No official communication yet by CAF on the new venue for the tournament.
CAF president Ahmad had spoken about the possibility of staging the 2019 tournament in another country if Cameroon is unable to finish the preparatory work on time. Ahmad now says that a new host will be determined by the end of the year, an indication that Cameroon could not be granted an extension of time as a result of what CAF describes as the need to meet contractual obligations and to ensure the success of such a prestigious African championship.
Meanwhile, the North African Football Union UNAF is putting pressure on CAF to move the 2019 AFCON tournament to Morocco.
