Protests rage on in Sagamu as residents have reached a boiling point over the policing methods deployed by the police force. The catalyst was the death of Kazeem Tiamiyu, allegedly killed by a car along the Sagamu- Abeokuta expressway after he was pushed off a moving police vehicle by an operative in Ogun State.
The incident happened when Tiamiyu was allegedly detained for wearing a military hat.
Civil protests engulfed the city. The police opened fire on protesters and five persons, including two policemen, reportedly died yesterday.
The Inspector General of Police has disbanded the Zonal Intervention Squad, which he points to as the culprits in the death of Kazeem, not Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) as widely believed. The IGP has promised the perpetrator would be brought to book and revealed that they were on an unsanctioned duty. He has promised to work on eliminating the trigger happy elements in the force.
Previously, the hashtag #EndSARS trended on social media site, Twitter for the whole day, with citizens lamenting their encounters with the squad.
