The state executive council of Kano State has officially dethroned Muhammadu Sanusi II as emir of Kano.
“The Emir of Kano is in total disrespect to lawful instructions from the office of the state Governor and other lawful authorities, including his persistent refusal to attend official meetings and programmes organized by the Government without any lawful justification which amount to total insubordination.” says the council.
Historical fact: In 1963, his grandfather Emir Sir Muhammadu Sanusi I was dethroned by the Northern premier, Ahmadu Bello. 57 years later, he meets the same fate at the hands of the state governor.
He ascended the throne after the death of his grand-uncle, Ado Bayero in 2014 attaining the second most important Muslim position in Nigeria after the Sultan of Sokoto. He served as the Central Bank of Nigeria governor from 2009 to 2014 before he was suspended for his role in raising the alarm in the NNPC $20 billion scandal.
