Majek Fashek passed away in his sleep in New York, his manager Omenka Uzoma confirmed. He had an undisclosed illness for some time, which Nigerian billionaire Femi Otedola pledged to help in financing.

Born Majekodunmi Fasheke, he rose to stardom with reggae inspired hits like “Send Down the Rain” and “So Long Too Long” working with major artists such as Jimmy Cliff.

He was plagued by drug addiction and sought treatment at a rehabilitation center in Abuja. He came out of it and returned to music.

After undergoing treatment for his illness in the UK, he returned to the US in January 2020 to be with his family.

“Let’s celebrate him, his achievements and his family”, his manager wrote on his official instagram account.

He is survived by 4 children and his ex-wife, Rita.
