This is an eventful day in Nigeria. Department of State Services, DSS operatives sealed up the premises of the National Assembly this morning. No one was allowed into the premises. Of course, the pervasive opinion was that the action could not have been taken without the authorization of the seat of power, the Presidency. While the situation was receiving the attention of the social media, Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, now acting President since the incumbent, Muhammadu Buhari is on a 10-day vacation in London, issued a statement that distanced the government from the action of DSS. He said that the take over of the premises of the National Assembly was not approved by government promising that those responsible for the act will face disciplinary action. With that statement, many posts on the social media took a U-turn by sharing the statement from the acting President.

In a surprise move that many people did not anticipate may come so quickly, Osinbajo announced the removal of the Director-General of DSS, Lawal Musa Daura with immediate effect. The man who is know to be a close relation of President Buhari was ordered by the acting President to hand over to the most senior officer of DSS until further notice. Obviously, Daura has been sacked because of the embarrassment the government suffered today as a result of the seizure of the premises of the National Assembly premises by his men.

Lately, the Assembly witnessed defection of Senators and Members of House of Representatives from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC mainly to the opposition, People’s Democratic Party, PDP. Both arms of the National Assembly are on recess till next month.
